Northern Virginia’s own Eileen Filler-Corn has been elected speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates — the first time a woman has held the position.
Filler-Corn, who has represented the 41st district, based in Springfield, since 2010, will also be the first Jew to hold the post.
“The firsts are not lost on me – the first woman and the first Jewish person elected Speaker-designee in our 400 year legislative history – but it doesn’t define me. When I joined this body less than 10 years ago, I was the only mom serving with school-aged kids. We have come so far since then,” Filler-Corn said in a statement.
With Dick Saslaw, who has served as state senator for almost 30 years in district 35, including Falls Church and parts of Springfield, slated to become majority leader in the state Senate, Northern Virginia will hold the top two legislative spots when the General Assembly reconvenes in January with its new Democratic majority.
